ANO’s MEDICAL OUTREACH: BUILDING HEALTHY COMMUNITIES IN ATTA

In June 2017, the Atta Nwambiri Organisation (ANO) launched its flagship medical outreach in the community of Atta, Imo State. This landmark event marked the beginning of ANO’s mission to bring accessible, quality healthcare to underserved populations, particularly those in rural and hard-to-reach areas with little or no access to basic health services.

Event Goal

The outreach was designed with a threefold objective:

  • To provide free medical care, including consultations, medication, and minor surgeries, to community members regardless of age or background.
  • To mobilize diaspora-based doctors and health professionals, encouraging them to give back to their home community.
  • To lay the foundation for a multi-year development plan, positioning healthcare as the entry point for broader community empowerment and sustainable development.

Activities & Services

During the outreach, the ANO medical team delivered a wide range of services that addressed both urgent health needs and preventive education, including:

  • General Medical Consultations and Treatments
Patients received diagnosis and care for common illnesses such as malaria, typhoid, skin infections, high blood pressure, and respiratory conditions. Special attention was given to vulnerable groups, including the elderly and children.
  • Minor Surgeries (Including for Children)
Qualified medical personnel performed minor procedures such as wound suturing, abscess drainage, and removal of cysts and growths, services that are often delayed due to lack of access or affordability.
  • Free Medication and Eye Care (Including Glasses)
All patients received appropriate medications at no cost. An on-site eye care station provided vision screening, treatment of eye conditions, and distribution of prescription glasses, giving many beneficiaries the gift of improved sight.
  • Health Education on Hygiene and Disease Prevention
The outreach also included interactive sessions that emphasized clean water usage, personal hygiene, and disease prevention strategies. Community members were educated on simple but life-saving practices to help reduce the spread of common illnesses.

Outcome of Event

The outreach had a transformative impact:

  • Over 3,000 residents from Atta and neighboring communities received quality healthcare services free of charge.
  • The event fostered trust in medical care and helped restore confidence in the value of early diagnosis and treatment.
  • It laid the groundwork for ANO’s long-term health programs, confirming that healthcare is a vital entry point for community development.
